Behaviors in Action… Mary Redditt

It’s often been said that disasters or crises bring out the best people. At Hussmann, we are proud of our team for always leading with our Behaviors for Success – a set of standards of what we stand for and how we act. We know achieving our results is important but how we achieve our results is even more important.

Mary Redditt, a trade compliance specialist, is one example of how our Behaviors guide us both at work and at home. Mary doesn’t typically sew – though she used to make clothes years ago. It was her daughter’s school assignment that brought her to start making masks.

“My daughter graduates from nursing school in May, and since the hospitals have become too dangerous for her clinical hours, she and her classmates were asked to make masks to go toward their community service hours,” Mary said. “So, we got a bunch of fabric and elastic and started making masks.”

At first, her daughter did all the sewing and Mary did all the fabric cutting. After they got their start though, other requests started coming in. First, Mary’s sister, who works in a hospital, needed additional masks. Then, Mary’s niece, who works in a rehabilitation center, needed masks too. Soon her daughter was focused back on her coursework, but Mary has continued to go it alone, sewing in the evenings and on weekends so she can donate masks to local hospitals.

Her family room has been transformed over the past month – one area is now a work-from-home space, the other a sewing space. She’s made just under 100 masks and plans to continue to make more as long as they’re needed.

“It definitely takes your mind off of the stress,” Mary said. “It’s one thing I can do to make this situation better.”
